Stoneware Pottery and Raku Pottery is made in two different ways

All our pottery is handmade in Bend Oregon.  Melissa started working in clay at a young age with her parents Michael and Michele Gwinup, owners of Blue Spruce Pottery.  Patrick started working in clay shortly before Coyote Moon Pottery was started.  He had always been an excellent artist and took to the medium quickly.  We make stoneware dinnerware and can do custom orders.  All of our functional pottery is fired in the stoneware method.  We also make raku pottery which is more decorative and has a metallic quality.  Vases and wall plates fired in the raku method make beautiful additions to any home.  Each piece of pottery is made one at a time either thrown on a potters wheel or made by rolling the clay through a slab roller, impressing it with various designs and then cutting out the final shape.

Stoneware Pottery

Our stoneware pottery is fired to a temperature of 2400 degrees F, which vitrifies the clay into a very durable material.  All of our functional pottery and dinnerware is fired in this way.  All the glazes are unique and completely non-toxic.  This type of pottery may be used in the oven, microwave, and dishwasher.  When cooking in the oven always have food at room temperature before cooking and never place on a hot burner or in a preheated oven.  Place the dish in a cool oven and add on a little cook time to compensate for not preheating.

     Raku Pottery

Raku pottery is made by removing the pieces from the kiln at 1800 degrees F, smoldering in sawdust, and then cooling rapidly with water. Most of our decorative pieces are made in this way.  Raku pottery should be handled with care. The metallic lusters may fade over time and should not be placed in direct sunlight. Clean only with a soft cloth and water. Raku pottery should not be used to hold food or liquids, as it is not vitrified and may leak.
